If you owed back taxes, January 2016 to July 2018 was the best time in US History to be delinquent. Due to resource issues, the IRS Automated Collection Systems shut down all levies during that time period. We at WATAX were wondering what the heck was going on! But now this Inspector General report clears it all up.
Not only was the levy machinery shut down for Americans and many of our customers but during the levy freeze many people saw their back debts expire. According to the report, "$4.33 billion expired, a 271% increase."
Circle back to now. Levies are here. If you owe back taxes, you better have your tax debt in an Offer in Compromise, Installment Agreement or Currently Not Collectible or you just might get levied on your bank account or wages. And if you owe taxes and haven't filed some tax returns, you better get cooking. Also very important: don't expect a courtesy letter from the IRS. We are seeing levies from people who got warning letters four years ago and that was enough.
