Taxpayers are naturally scared by computer-generated letters from the IRS. But that fear is often misguided and prompts people to be impulsive by calling the IRS FAR earlier than they needed to. There are different stages to the collection process. You DON'T want to contact the IRS when you are in the earliest collection stage, e.g. when you receive a CP504 letter. Why? You will put yourself on a deadline with the IRS, one or two months before you NEED to.
